What parent doesn't love to discover while snooping around the internets that their child is now a zombie. I didn't see anything on Nancy Grace or Google News about this but there is it. Could this be a side effect of the H1N1 virus? It will certainly be difficult for me to heed the wise advice of many people who have faced this problem and come out the other side alive but I know I must. Scientist say "Kill the brain, and you kill the ghoul."
Come see the carnage in person at The Freaker's Ball with The Malone 9 PM October 31 at The Palace in Ferndale.
Here's a shot of the doors I built for the woodshed. They are made from red cedar. I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Sarah has promised to make a nice steel latch for them.
It was 77 deg today and beautiful. I spent the morning reading and finishing up hanging the new doors I built for the woodshed. Then I went surfing. The swell report posted yesterday called for the swell to be 5 ft at 7 sec wind swell. This turned out to be somewhat wrong and when I got to the beach at 3:30 we had a nice crisp 5' at 13 sec swell, no wind and an out going tide. The crowd was thin and familiar when I paddled out. I got some nice long rides from by the rock and some fun weird sucking lefts on the north side of the washrock after I grew tired of that spot. It was really nice to have some good quality waves after my last couple of go outs being in less than great conditions. It was an outrageously nice day all the way around.
My ever so thoughtful mother took note when a while back I pointed out that I liked the surf art of our own hometown artist Shawn Griggs. As a gift for my birthday she arranged it so that I could stop into Shawn's gallery and pick out a print. What a fun gift. I stopped by yesterday and Shawn and I chatted while I rooted through his stuff to find just the right one. I came home with some cool new home decor. I ended up picking out a really nice print of "Holy Waters". The subject of the painting is our local beach on one of those rare days when the surf is really really good there. It fits here at the house, the beach is right down the road. I think Shawn and my mom knew that was the one I would want.
Sarah got me up early to take me out into them thar hills for a hillbilly-hippy homesteaders yard sale. A whole lot of the stuff looked really familiar. We picked up things like a small solar panel, goat supplies and I even got a megaphone just like the one I would need to address the crowd at an uprising. There was a strange undercurrent of space alien vibe and a lifetime's collection of gadgets and meters. My best find was a small Tesla Coil but the folks running the sale decided that it wasn't for sale. There was way too much stuff to look through. We had a fun morning.
Josh's band The Malone played at Hop's in Humboldt Saturday to a crowd of 3000 folks give or take. My timing was all messed up so we missed all but the last tune. I saw their whole show up at a street fair in Arcata on Thursday. They sound better every time I hear them play.
I seem to have injured my arm just in time for the first real swell we have had pet our shores in a while. I thought it was healing just fine until I grabbed an arm full of the first good right I got yesterday and ouch! The inside of my arm is now a bit black and blue. The injury seem localized to my elbow area so maybe with a few days rest and some sort of elbow brace of I can make the backside of the swell. It's 5' at 14 secs now and building.
I built this hydraulic ram pump with information from Clemson.edu and various other websites. The first working ram pump was invented by Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (26 August 1740 – 26 June 1810) who also invented the hot air balloon. I love the idea of being able to pump water from our spring for free and now I am. My pump is delivering about 12 psi which is enough to pump a small amount of water straight up about 20 ft.
Saturday we trucked up to Eureka to catch The Malone at the 4th of July street fair in Eureka. They sounded great and the show was sponsored by KSLG and went out live on the radio. They even played a couple of songs I'd never heard.
We had some pretty meaty surf conditions yesterday morning. It seems like months since Camel has worked. It was like winter in the summertime with big green ramps and warm sunny skies. I took my G&S out for it's maiden voyage. The board is more fun that I'd imagined it would be. I can duck dive it which is good considering how thick it is. There was really no crowd at all, 6 or 8 and spread all over the place.
They have some fun gig's this summer, 4th of July in downtown Eureka and Hops in Humboldt in August I think. I hope that the parents of the folks from Mobil Deathcamp are so proud of their spawn.
Score! Todays sweetness continued on when I scored this very clean 7'Oh G&S single fin pintail for 100 bucks at Fortuna's city wide yard sale. The photo's don't do any justice to the thickness and downrailness of this thing. It's out in the sun curring as it had some minor issues I had to make watertight. It's got that Larry Bertleman thing going on. Today was a fun day for all and we got to see rock star bassist Josh B.
This spot is just 10 minutes from my house but the swell, sand and stars have to be aligned just so to make it any fun. This week when nothing else was working it has been beautiful. I saw the Shawn Griggs our very own local surf artist, get a stand up barrel as I walked down toward the peak on Sunday. He painted the scene below. Last night Sarah came with and took some very cool pictures. I got skunked last night but got a couple during this morning's rematch. Just me and the sea lions out there.
sarahshevett and I went up town and had dinner at a secret restaurant The 11th Hour Dinner Club this evening. We had a very sweet time. The chef was our friend Brett and he did a great job on the food. It was Indian food which was full of exotic spices and super tasty. I wasn't sure what to expect and I think everyone thought it went off well. No one was seriously injured.
